How art gives shape to cultural change

  I watched in internet this video: "How art gives shape to cultural change". I decided to watch this video without the sound at beginning to try to understand artworks by myself.

  I choose for you the artwork that we can see at 4.14. It’s two painting that I think work together to create the artwork. The first we can see black people in a small boat. People seem really exiting. They are dress with American revolutionary dress. In the second painting there are four blacks men. They seem to be in jail and to be dress with modern dress.

  I choose this artwork because, in first time I like this two painting I find that the first it’s like a cartoon. And in a second time this artwork shows me a truth. The American revolutionary was a sign of liberty. Blacks and whites were fighting together. But after there is a long time where the black were discriminating and still today like show the second painting, it’s a hold and sad story.

How do images work, according to Thelma Golden?

  When we see an image we try to find what the artist want to show us. We always try to find the meaning of an image, and for that we give to it our interpretation. People have always different interpretation and often not that the artist thought when he create the image. So image has the power to make us thinking about any subject without give us always what the artist were thinking.

Which questions does she raise about the role a museum plays in a society?

  A museum is a place where people can see a lot of artwork. An artwork is like image, it makes people thinking and sharing their ideas. So a museum is place of discussion, where artist expose their ideas, point of views of the world and people think, share it.

Golden says: “Think about artists, not as content providers,.... but again as real catalysts (for change).”

  I agree with her point of view of artist. Artists are really important in our society, they make us thinking about new subject.  To create a change or novelty we need to think of a new way. Artist in society have always been people who think of a new way. It’s a real motor for the development of a society
